Lymington Under 13 As win NFJCA Play Off Final
Lymington CC U13a ( New Forest South winners ) overcame Hyde CC U13a ( New Forest North winners ) by 6 runs in what was a tense and exciting league play off final played in glorious sunshine at Bashley CC on 19 July. Both sides had each recorded 8 straight league wins in their respective seasons to qualify for this finale to the New Forest league season.
Winning the toss Lymington elected to bat and openers James Williams ( 19 ) and Sam Stockton ( 33 not out and retired ) got the Lymington innings off to an encouraging start as they reached 25/0 in the 5th over. The introduction of J Musselwight led to a breakthrough as Williams was caught in the covers trying to hit out and the Hyde bowlers then cleverly restricted the Lymington batsmen by taking the pace of the ball. Some good running between the wickets kept the Lymington run rate up as they advanced to 48/2 in the 9th over. However the introduction of Dorset county bowler J Turner nearly turned the match as, bowling at impressive speed, he delivered 3 wickets for Hyde in his first 2 overs – all clean bowled. At 71/5 in the 12th over, Lymington were clearly rattled and in danger of an England like mid order collapse. It took Malachi Mills ( 8 not out ) and Will Usher ( 14 not out ) to steady the ship and with some brave running between the wickets they took Lymington to a respectable total of 106 runs for 5 wickets off their 18 overs.
Lymington then seized the early initiative in the Hyde reply, as opening bowler Thomas Sykes delivered a double wicket maiden in his first over. A fine catch by George Gower at square leg was followed by a clean bowled dismissal, leaving the Lymington captain on a hatrick which the Hyde nos 4 was able to keep out. Harvey Jefferies followed this with a maiden and after 3 overs Hyde were reeling at 4 runs for 2 wickets. A Turner ( 8 ) and J Musselwhite ( 16 ) clawed Hyde back into the match and with some wayward Lymington bowling, at 39 for 2 after 7 overs, Hyde were in the game again. Will Usher finally saw off Turner with an lbw and then Jude Tollerfield ( 4 overs 22 runs for 2 wickets ) and Jenson Lightfoot ( 2 overs 7 runs for 1 wicket ) accounted for the Hyde middle order. However with danger man J Turner still at the crease Hyde were still in the game. 4 boundaries in the space of 3 overs lifted their run rate and it came down to Hyde requiringing 14 off the last over to win with 4 wickets in hand. The final over started with a single, a bye and a further boundary to leave Hyde needing 8 off their last 3 balls. To Lymington’s relief, Turner ( 33 not out ) was then retired and Harvey Jefferies was able to restrict the new batsman as Hyde finished on a total of 101 runs for 7 wickets from their 18 overs.
