Under 9s compete for the Ashes!
Lymington’s Under 9s squad took advantage of a spare Friday evening to stage a pairs competition in which they competed for ‘The Ashes’.
The competition was evenly contested throughout with first pair Henry Wood and Jack Stewart setting the pace with 18 runs from their six overs. The second pairing of Freddie Fitzsimmons and Nic Simons equaled this total thanks to some good running between the wickets. James Collinson and six year old Winston Loveless scored 10 runs and protected their wickets well in the face of some excellent bowling. But the overall winners by some distance were the next pair Marcus Wray and Jacob Varney who smashed the ball to all parts. Marcus hit three boundaries in one over alone, including a big six over square leg. The final threesome of Nick Dodd, Freddie Phillips and Baden Loveless showed good technique, but by this stage the bowling had improved to the extent that runscoring was proving tricky. On the bowling front, Jack Stewart’s cunning ‘ice-ball’ was near-impossible to hit, while Marcus Wray bowled with great accuracy (off his short run up, anyway!). Henry Wood and Nick Dodd excelled with their groundfielding and Baden’s throwing was so powerful, one can only wonder how many Shredded Wheat he has for breakfast in the morning.
A good time was had by all! Pictured above are ‘Ashes’ winners Jacob Varney and Marcus Wray.
